About Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)
Step 1: Install an authenticator app
You’ll need an authenticator app on your mobile device to generate your 2FA codes.
Recommended app:
- Download the Google Authenticator app for iPhone (App Store)
- Download the Google Authenticator app for Android (Google Play)
Step 2: Link Vault to your authenticator app
Once your app is installed, follow these steps to connect it to Vault.
In Vault:
- Go to Settings > My Settings
- Click the My Password tab
- Under Two-Factor Authentication (2FA), click Activate
The 2FA activation window will open with a unique QR code appearing.
- Open your authenticator app
- Tap the + icon to scan the QR code
- Scan the Vault QR code
In the authenticator app, you will find MRI Vault: vault.user (your Vault username) and an auto-updating 6-digit code.
- Enter this code in Vault in the 2FA activation window
- Click Save/Activate to complete the login
- Click Save/Update
Troubleshooting and tips
If you're having trouble logging in or scanning the QR code, try these solutions.
Check device time settings
Incorrect time settings can cause code mismatches.
- Open your device’s Settings
- Go to Date & Time
- Enable Set Automatically
Remove duplicate Vault entries
Multiple Vault entries in your authenticator app can cause confusion.
- Swipe left or right on duplicates
- Tap the Bin icon to delete
- Re-scan the QR code to add a single entry.
Use the app, not your camera
Always open the authenticator app to scan the QR code. Do not use your phone’s camera directly.
Reset your 2FA
If you lose access to your authenticator app or need to reset 2FA:
- Contact a system administrator
- The administrator will go to Settings > User Management
- Select your user profile > Click Deactivate
- Log in again and follow the setup steps above.
